The third day of The Revelation Film Festival saw this Movie Freak buckle down with two great films: Of Dolls and Murder & Radio Free Albemuth. The Astor is now in full swing with the lobby constantly filled with patrons bumping elbows to find either the toilet or the cinema. In the world of film festivals both rooms are of equal importance. I’ll admit 2 films is a pretty light day for The Movie Freak, but this is a 10 day festival and one must pace themselves. Now, on to the movies! Continue reading
Revelation 14: Day Two
Sorry for the long delay in getting these out to you guys. Far too often I find myself in circumstances which make me choose between blogging and real-life responsibilities. Revelation has been really great this year but has fallen during some busy times for The Movie Freak. Day 2 was such a diverse group of films! The day went from smoldering dark dramas to zombies. Who could ask for more?!
Click ahead for the roundup from Day 2 of The Revelation Film Festival. Continue reading
Revelation 14: Day One
Who doesn’t like racing out of work at 5 o’clock to go see a full night of movies? My friday night at Revelation 14 got off to a great start with some amazing short films and ended with a bloody maniacal horror film. That is what I love about Revelation: something different at every turn. Other than watching some great flicks with other Revvers (is this the proper term for a collective of Revelation patrons? Somebody get back to me on this pronto.) I had the chance to physically meet some of the great people who have been following me on Twitter @notatuna ! Yes, the digital word and the real world colliding. Who would have thought?? Continue reading
Revelation 14: Opening Night
The lobby of the Astor Theatre was buzzing with an eager audience waiting for the doors to open. Seeing two separate queues outside the theatre made me realize just how big tonight was going be for REV. Now into my 3rd RevFilmFest I consider myself a veteran of the festival, but looking at my behavior you would only see the giddy actions of a 10 year-old jumping at the chance to see a movie. With a Coopers Dark in hand I settled in for the opening ceremonies of REV 14. The remarks from Richard Sowada and Jack Sargeant commented on how the 14th RevFilmFest is just like any other teenager: rebellious, questions authority, and always looking for a good time. I’ll have to certainly agree that even though the films may not suit every single patron of the festival you have to admit that these films push boundaries and get your full attention. I guess that’s why I keep coming back to this festival. These films incite a dialogue that the trivial garbage that looms at the local megaplex can’t. I mean who do you REALLY want to chat with: the Harry Potter fan or the guy who can’t stop taking about Hobo with a Shotgun? Honestly. The schedule for this year looks amazing and I can’t wait for my ass to go numb everyday sitting in the Astor Theater. Thank you Revelation Film Festival for reminding me each year why I love film so much. Continue reading
Return of Revelation
It’s that time of year again movie nerds and festival geeks! Revelation 14 opening night is tomorrow! Unlike last year The Movie Freak is prepared for the unrelenting barrage of films scheduled for the festival. An Excel spreadsheet was required to maximize efficiency! WOO! As usual I’ll be live tweeting each day of the festival (@notatuna) making sure no detail (or obviously cheesy pun) is left unturned. Notatuna.com will also have daily festival updates of the films I watch and a mini review of each one.
Last year Notatuna.com received TONS of support and kind words from the Perth film community during Rev. I just wanted to say THANK YOU again to all those people who took a few seconds to check out the blog and follow me on Twitter.
The HUGE hiatus I took is now over thanks to a reworked day job schedule and a few caffeine fueled meetings with people who want to see this blog do and be MORE. Ideas are floating around everywhere and hopefully we’ll get some of them off the ground soon.
Hey, It’s good to see you guys again.
NOW GO WATCH SOME MOVIES!
Tuna Review: Howling III: The Marsupials
Just When You Thought it was Safe to Go Down Under
The above tagline is real and sets the tone for this 1987 horror film from Australian director Philippe Morgan. Morgan also brought us the previous installment in the Howling franchise Howling II: Stirba – Werewolf Bitch. A quick search and you’ll find he was also responsible for the Dennis Hopper film Mad Dog Morgan, and Pterodactyl Woman from Beverly Hills. The latter is a 1997 film starring Beverly D’Angelo as the Pterodactyl woman in question. *Adds movie to Must Watch List*
Best of the Worst
Popcrunch.com recently listed its “16 Best Worst Films” complete with video evidence for each title. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any Michael Bay films on their list. Pearl Harbor just missed the cut I suppose. With the rise in popularity of the 2009 documentary Best Worst Movie the idea of a beloved movie that is in fact “so bad its good” is reaching the masses. Having been an MST3K fan (MSTie) for those playing at home) since I could reach for the remote control, I know how genuinely entertaining a bad movie can be for an audience with the right attitude. Popcrunch.com’s list covers contemporary bad movies as well as some iconic cult classics. Netflix these offbeat films or hunt them down at your local videostore. The Movie Freak encourages you to support your local videstore! GO HERE to see the list.
Machete Maidens Unleashed!
In his followup to the Ozploitation documentary Not Quite Hollywood, director Mark Hartley brings the world of Filipino b-movies to life in Machete Maidens Unleashed!. During the 1970′s and 1980′s the Philippines was under the control of a ruthless dictator and as you’ll learn in the trailer “Fighting back was forbidden. Chaos was contained. Indecency was punished. There was no sign of revolution. EXCEPT IN THEIR MOVIES!” What occurred was the influx of film crews who took advantage of the exotic locale and cheap workforce to produce genre films ranging from blaxploitation to good ol’ low budget monster movies. The Movie Freak’s personal favorite is The Big Bird Cage with Pam Grier. Yeah, that’s a Roger Corman joint all right. Once Roger saw how cheaply he could produce films in the Philippines he never looked back. Thanks to Twitchfilm.net we’ve got a trailer for Machete Maidens Unleashed that’s chock full of goodies from an era of filmmaking that makes the movies of today look tame and childish. The film has its premier this month at the Melbourne Film Festival here in Australia. Unfortunately, The Movie Freak won’t make it to the festival this year but looking forward a screening here in Perth. Now, on to the trailer! Continue reading
The Norwegian Ninja poster has a fat captain.
The wait is over. Thanks to twitchfilm.net we’ve got a look at the theatrical poster for the action comedy Norwegian Ninja. However, once you click the link there is no turning back. You’ll be presented with something so awesome that it may ruin you for other movies. The Movie Freak thought the trailer for this epic movie was as good as it could get… until he saw the poster. Feast your eyes on NORWEGIAN NINJA! Continue reading
Revelation Film Festival: Day Eight
Day Eight at the Revelation Film Festival would be the final day of ass numbing sessions at The Astor Theater for The Movie Freak. Due to the scheduling of another event during the last weekend of the festival I couldn’t attend the last screenings. My last day at the festival started out with praising Jesus through the art of song and ended with a teenager having the worst date ever. Keep checking out Notatuna for full reviews of the films screened during the festival. Continue reading
